You may be wondering, “Why on earth would a church, who has been in existence over 160 years, want to purchase a mall?” The answer is simple – to share the good news of Jesus Christ with our area and to continue to meet the needs of our community.
Summer Grove was formed by a handful of people in 1849
We have grown and moved three different times since those early days we met on the corner of Bert Kouns and Mansfield Rd. Our desire to be an integral part of the Ark-La-Tex along with our desire to help people become healthy and happy through knowing Jesus Christ has never changed. That is why we chose to forego constructing more buildings on our beautiful property in southwest Shreveport. We saw an opportunity to help our community. The area was fast declining and heading for real trouble. Someone needed to help turn things around. Our people, through faith in God, believed we were the ones to do it. We purchased South Park Mall in 2005 and began transforming a J.C. Penney’s building into a beautiful place of worship for our Lord Jesus Christ. The former South Park Mall, now called Summer Grove Baptist Church, is a massive facility with some challenges, but also with great potential.
We, the people of Summer Grove, are looking up!
In fact we chose to build a beautiful Bell Tower with a glorious cross and a magnificent steeple on our new Worship Center to indicate the hope that we have. We are looking upward – we know that great things are in store for our great community. We also understand that we, in our own strength, can do nothing, but Christ in us can accomplish great things in our area, state, our nation and even the world. So, as you can see, although our physical address has changed, our focus of helping people transform their lives is still the same.
We believe this is just the beginning of what God wants to do at our new facility.
God has given us a vision – one that will take some time to accomplish – but with His help through His people can be a place where individuals and families can experience a safe, warm and loving environment. We want to help people develop friendships and relationships that can improve their quality of life.
